Being self employed means you have to have a stomach for risk, a pretty high threshold for it. Nothing is certain, and yet, you have more control over your own destiny than any other business form. Make friends with that "only slightly terrifying" feeling. Learn to love it. In my life, it's the feeling that lets me know I'm on the right track, I'm pushing the envelope, I'm putting myself out there and not playing it safe. Safe and self employment are like oil and water. When I was starting out in Phoenix 15 years ago, I was dating a guy who was a singer/songwriter who would do open mike nights and gigs at local coffee shops and bars. I used to think that if he had the courage to stand up in front of people and share his heart in such a public way, certainly I could sit at my computer and write my heart out and make the cold calls, and talk to strangers to find work.
